Inmitten des Mittelmeers liegt Kreta, die grösste der griechischen Inseln, ca. 250 km lang und maximal 60 km breit.

Gross ist auch die Vielfalt der Landschaften, Küsten und der Vegetation: verschiedene Mikroklimata, die von der typisch mediterranen  (Olivenbäume, Ginster, Orangenbäume) zum Subtropischen (Palmen und Agaven) und zu den menschenleeren herrlichen Bergschluchten des Inselinnern reichen.

Als Wiege der glanzvollen minoischen Zivilisation, der ersten und ältesten europäischen Zivilisation, deren Niedergang ca. 1600 v. Chr. infolge des Vulkanausbruchs der nahegelegenen Insel Santorin begann, zeichnet sich Kreta durch den ausserordentlichen archäologischen Reichtum der Stätten und Paläste aus (wovon die berühmtesten die von Knossos und von Phaestos sind), Fundstätten, die noch heute die Grösse der Vergangenheit bekunden.

Angesichts ihrer Lage von bemerkenswertem strategischem und kommerziellem Interesse ist die Geschichte der Insel ein einziges Aufeinanderfolgen von Kämpfen und daraus erfolgenden Herrschaften (insbesondere türkisch/ottomanisch und venezianisch), von denen architektonische und kulturelle Spuren auf dem ganzen Territorium übrigbleiben.

Kretas Wirtschaft, traditionell auf den Olivenanbau, die Viehzucht und den Fischfang gegründet, hat dank des Tourismus in den vergangenen 20 Jahren eine starke Entwicklung erfahren.

Die prächtigen historischen Städte der Nordküste (Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion und Agios Nikolaos) sind folglich bestens ausgerüstet für den Empfang der Reisenden, reich an Anregungen und Sehenswürdigkeiten.

Trotzdem genügt es, einige Kilometer im Auto oder Bus ins Landesinnere zu fahren, um in die wildeste Natur einzutauchen und das ursprüngliche Kreta kennenzulernen.

Mit dieser Webseite versuchen wir, dem Kretareisenden einige wichtige Informationen zu geben und bei einer ersten Orientierung behilflich zu sein.

Natürlich ist es unmöglich, ganz Kreta durch eine Internetseite oder einen Reiseführer  kennenzulernen…

Da muss man schon paar mal hinreisen, es gibt immer etwas Neues zu entdecken!

Amid the Mediterranean is located Crete , the largest Greek island, with a length of about 250 km long and a width of max. 60 km . Large is also the variety of landscapes, coasts and vegetation: various microclimates stretching from the Mediterranean brushwood (olive-trees, broom, orange-trees) to the subtropical (palm-trees and agaves) and to the deserted splendid ravines in the island's interior.

As cradle of the magnificent Minoan civilization, the first and oldest European civilization, whose decline began about 1600 BC in consequence of the volcanic eruption of the nearby island of Santorini, Crete is characterized by the extraordinary archeological richness of the sites and palaces (the most famous of which is Knossos), archeological sites which testify still today the greatness of the past.

Considering its situation of remarkable strategic and commercial interest, the history of the island is one sole succession of battles and the resulting dominations (especially Turkish/Ottoman and Venetian) of which remain architectonical and cultural traces on the whole territory.

Crete 's economy, traditionally based on the cultivation of olives, on cattle-breading and on fishing, underwent in the last 20 years, thanks to tourism, a strong development.

The splendid historic towns of the north-coast (Hania, Rethymnon, Iraklion and Agios Nikolaos) are consequently perfectly equipped to welcome guests, and rich in inspirations and distractions.

Nevertheless, a few kilometers in car or bus are sufficient to plunge into the wildest nature, in contact with the limpid water of the Libyan Sea , in order to find the authentic flavour of the deep South.

With this werbsite we try to give the visitor to Crete some important informations and to be helpful with a first orientation.

 Of course, it is impossible, to get to know the whole of Crete by a website or a travel-guide.

 Therefore it is necessary to go there a few times, as there is always something new to discover.
